If you’re unexpectedly pregnant and have already had one pregnancy termination, abortion is not the only option. If you don’t want another abortion, it also may not be the best option for you.
Remember, you alone know what is best for you, and legally no one can make this decision for you.
If you know that abortion is not the right option for you, then take time to consider adoption or parenting. At Safe Harbor Women’s Medical Clinic, we also offer no-cost option consultations where you can ask questions in a safe, supportive setting.
Adoption
For some women, adoption is suitable because, as the birth mother, you are in complete control of the level of privacy you want, and you can also select the adoptive family.
Many adoptions in the U.S. today are open, which means you may have the opportunity to stay in contact with the adoptive family and maintain a relationship with your child as they grow.
If you prefer more privacy, you can choose a semi-open adoption with limited communication through an agency or a closed adoption where identifying details are sealed, and there is no contact with the adoptive family.
Parenting
Although parenting has its challenges, many people find that raising a child is incredibly rewarding. Here are a few questions to ask yourself if you’re considering this option:
- Can I provide financially for a child?
- How might this decision affect my future plans and goals?
- Am I prepared to continually invest in a child’s well-being and development?
Considering the practical elements of raising a child for the next 18 years is a sobering thought, but you don’t have to have all the answers today. This is simply a good first step to take as you consider which is the best decision for you.
