Signs You May Be Pregnant
Did you recently have unprotected sex? Or did your birth control fail? If so, you’re likely worried you might be pregnant.
While early pregnancy can cause common symptoms in many women, pregnancy testing and an ultrasound are the only ways to know for sure if you’re pregnant.
Top Early Pregnancy Symptoms
When you become pregnant, special hormones prepare your body for pregnancy. These hormones can cause you to feel strange physical symptoms, including:
- Missed menstrual period: This is often the first symptom of pregnancy. Early pregnancy hormones tell your uterine lining to thicken, which causes your periods to stop for the duration of your pregnancy.
- Sore, swollen breasts: Is your bra fitting tighter than usual? Are your nipples or breasts feeling more tender or sensitive than normal? Pregnancy might be to blame. The same hormones that cause you to miss your period are preparing your breasts for breastfeeding.
- Nausea and/or vomiting: Have you been feeling sick to your stomach without a known cause (sickness, food poisoning, etc.)? This could be an indication of early pregnancy. While this symptom is typically called “morning sickness,” it can actually happen any time of the day and last throughout your entire pregnancy.
- Fatigue: Feeling more tired than usual, as if gravity is weighing extra hard on you, can be a symptom of early pregnancy—especially if your fatigue is accompanied by other early pregnancy symptoms.
- Increased urination: Have you been running to the bathroom more than usual? If so, pregnancy could be to blame. During pregnancy, your blood volume increases, which in turn causes more urine output.
While these symptoms can mean that you’re pregnant, they can also indicate other potentially serious health conditions. This is why, if you’re having any of these symptoms, taking a pregnancy test is important.
